Youth struggling with high levels of neuroticism, for example, tend to experience emotions like fear, sadness, and anger more intensely and frequently than their peers. A further distinction has been made between primary and secondary emotions (e.g., Ekman, 1992; Izard, 1977). Such issues may stem from various interconnected factors, including genetic predispositions, traumatic experiences, or attempts to avoid or suppress feelings. For example, emotional responses may be excessive, prolonged, too frequent, or contextually inappropriate (Gross & Jazaieri, 2014). Primary emotions (e.g., fear, sadness, anger, joy) are considered biologically driven, evolutionarily conserved, and expressed universally across cultures. Emotions are also distinct from moods which tend to be longer-lasting and more diffuse.A further distinction has been made between primary and secondary emotions (e.g., Ekman, 1992; Izard, 1977).

A psychologist can potentially help you learn to manage your symptoms through counseling or other forms of therapy.
